“The city *of Donetsk* is being smashed to bits, but we only respond with six Grad missiles, and that’s it?! And that in the wrong direction! The great Russia is being shelled, and we are silent! […] This is not just shelling anymore, that can be tolerated, but this is HUMILIATION!”
This is the infamous Russian torturer, GRU officer and “war reporter” Sladkov raging about Ukrainian artillery fire on DPR positions in Donetsk in his Telegram channel on 4 July 2022. Sladkov is right – this is humiliation, humiliation of the second world’s strongest army that is failing at the very objective of this so-called “special military operation”, which was to “protect the people of Donbas” in a war which this second world’s strongest army ignited back in 2014.
We are in the fifth month of the war and the success of the Russian army is so granular compared to stated goals that I could make a porridge out of their victories. Ukraine on the other hand is doing all it can with their limited resources to inflict as much damage on the aggressor, and strikes of LDPR that started about a month ago, as well as shelling of military objects in Kursk and Belgorod Oblasts of Russia and a number of mysterious explosions at the ammunition stockpiles are having a tremendous effect on the Russian psyche.
There is no one in the Russian internet sphere who has not weighted in on this, but with time the situation is getting worse, and some reporters start jumping on each other like dogs. It is obvious to everyone that the second strongest army is simply being humiliated in front of the whole world, and no one knows how long the internal audience will tolerate this humiliation while the Russians are unable to do anything about it.
I’m not here to judge what exactly the Ukrainian artillery is shelling – all I know from the Ukrainian officials is that they never intend to hurt civilians, and that’s enough for me. I’d prefer no civilians in LDPR died and I hope Ukrainian authorities are doing their best to prevent senseless loss of life. But I can say judging from what I read that the current strategy employed by Ukraine is extremely effective in demoralising Russian invaders.
